There’s been precedent for Blizzard taking away NPCs completely from their game. Two NPCs named after popular WoW streaming player Swifty were removed from the game quietly last summer. Blizzard has not provided a formal reason of the decision, however it was clear that the deactivation of NPCs was prompted by allegations of sexual violations. A voice actor Quinton Flynn, the voice actor who voiced the character of Kael’thas Sunstrider for World of Warcraft and WoW’s Burning Crusade expansion, saw his voice removed from the game in the spring of this year. Again, no specific reason was given to justify the change, but it’s thought to be due to sexual misconduct allegations brought against Flynn in the same period.

But even if Afrasiabi’s NPCs are eliminated and his quests revised, players are asking if any decision taken by Blizzard’s team could be considered symbolic enough, due to allegations that Afrasiabi’s activities were said to be well-known to management, even Brack himself. Players have begun to stage in-game protests to counter the allegations in the lawsuit, with several saying they’ve decided to cancel their gaming subscriptions and using the game-time remaining on their accounts as a way to motivate others to do the same.

Blizzard is yet to comment on the matter in public, however, an Activision Blizzard spokesperson’s response to California’s lawsuit states that the picture painted by the Department of Fair Employment and Housing is “not the Blizzard workplace of the present,” and that the company has made “significant changes to its culture” over the last several years, despite Afrasiabi continuing to work for the company in a senior position as recently as the year before. A confidential Blizzard email from Brack which was obtained by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier call the lawsuit allegations “extremely troubling” and the behavior outlined in the email “completely unacceptable.”
