Have you been told you’re a “cusp sign”? Think that you are a mix of neighboring zodiac signs in astrology because you were born near the beginning or the end of a zodiac sign?
In this video, I explain why the understanding of the zodiac as a gradient isn’t valid, and I go into why you feel like a mix of signs. Astrology is the study of celestial alignments in correlation with earthly events, and in astrology, we aren’t just looking at the Sun. We’re looking at an entire natal chart. So, in the chart, we can see how planets are either in one sign or in another sign. All a cusp is is a term to describe being at the very end or very beginning of a sign. There is no gradient, no blending, no mixing around the cusps. With what understanding, it’s important to also note that you aren’t one sign – you’re an entire natal chart.
Often when people really believe that they contain the qualities of both signs, it’s because they have distinct planets in neighboring signs. And while the zodiac isn’t a gradient bleeding into one another, there are nuances to portions within each sign, such as the bounds, terms, or decans. These ways of peering into the terrain of a sign don’t change the sign’s inherent isolated significations. They add specific particularities.
Feeling like you have traits of a neighboring sign can more often than not be represented by having other planets in that sign. “Cusps” exist as a geographical designation of the zodiac, but “cusp signs” do not exist as a meaningful phenomenon.
