Southwest Of Salem: The documentary about the San Antonio Four tells the story of “four Latina lesbians in the state of Texas who were wrongfully convicted of a really heinous crime,” says the film’s director Deborah S Esquenazi. The four women — poor, openly gay, women of colour in a conservative city — were convicted of gang raping two young girls. Daily Xtra spoke with Esquenazi, who was in Toronto for the 2016 Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, to ask why police targeted these women.
